Folklórny súbor Čarnica
Folklore ensemble Čarnica is the oldest folklore ensemble in Košice. It was founded in the autumn of 1957 by linking an already existing girl dance group Vienok and a group of boys from Secondary School of Civil Engineering in Košice. The ensemble began as Folklore youth group at the County House of Pioneers and Youth in Košice. Then it started to performance their first choreography, first performances and first successes and awards. In 1958 is group already called as Folklore ensemble Čarnica.
In Kosice´s cultural scene, Čarnica has been continuously active for 60 years, and during this period there been a lot of enthusiastic dancers, singers and musicians. The common feature of all was and still is a love to folk song , music and dance.
An ensemble focuses on stage processing of folk traditions, especially from the East Slovakia. In its repertoire it has dances and songs from Spiš, Abov, Gemer, Zemplín, Šariš or Goral area.
Since 1991 the ensemble has been working as a civic association called Folklore ensemble Čarnica. The basic goals of this association is the preservation of cultural values and the promotion of Slovak folklore among the public at home and abroad. Although the main activity of the ensemble is to find, keep and continue to spread what once was born in the hearts of our ancient fathers and mothers, the upbringing and relationship of the young people to the nation, to its traditions and pride to the native country is an integral part of the activity of association.
Besides the ensemble of Čarnica, FS Čarnica also has a children’s folklore ensemble Čarnička, which is attented approximately 45 children aged 6 to 14 years under the quidance of experienced former members of FS Čarnica. There is also children´s dance school Čarnulienka , where children learn the basics of folk dance, folk songs , customs or rhymes. In Čarnulienka are replaced about 80 children every year.
FS Čarnica actively participates in the cultural events in Košice, it is a regular participant of regional folklore festivals and celebrations.
During its existence, Čarnica represented Slovak folklore on 80 foreign tours in 23 countries of Europe and Asia.
For a dignified representation of Slovakia and the promotion of folklore wealth of East Slovak region has received many recognitions and awards.
